During the late '60s, '70s, and most of the '80s, many big and good-looking actors made their entries in Bollywood and established an identity for themselves. While a selected few delivered jubilee hits most of them had their fan following and fan base. It was the time when instead of rivalry the actors enjoyed healthy competition.

Talent hunt competition and rise of the first Bollywood superstar

In 1965, Filmfare and United Producers organised a Talent Search Programme in which applications from all over India were invited from aspiring actors. More than 10,000 youngsters participated in this program which also included names like Rajesh Khanna , Subhash Ghai, and Vinod Mehra which later on became big names in Bollywood.

The talent hunt was judged by highly acclaimed directors and producers of those times including Bimal Roy, Nasir Hussain, G.P. Sippy, Shakti Samant, B.R. Chopra, and Om Prakash Mehra. So the competition exposed the new talent to the best and biggest names in Bollywood at that time.

Subhash Ghai was no competition for the handsome hunks like Rajesh Khanna and Vinod Mehra who reached the finals. The last battle was between Kakaji and charming Vinod Mehra but eventually, it was Jatin Khanna who later on became well known as Rajesh Khanna who won just by one point. This gave Kakaji a free ticket to stardom as producers and directors lined up at his doors and he was signed for many movies at that time.

Within a couple of years, he became a very big star and delivered back-to-back superhits, which made him the first-ever superstar of Bollywood. Ironically, Vinod Mehra who was also quite good-looking never really succeeded as the lead hero and later on, was mostly seen as the second lead opposite big stars. Of course, he did some solo movies like Ghar and Anuraag but he could never emerge as the superstar of Bollywood.
