An ASHA worker has alleged that she was beaten up by a doctor at the Bhawanipatna District Headquarters Hospital (DHH) in Kalahandi.

As per reports, ASHA worker Sangita Nayak has accused Doctor Hemangi Meher of the Obstetrics and Gynecology department of physically manhandling her and filed a written complaint in that connection at the office of the Chief District Medical  Officer (CDMO).
She also alleged that Meher also tried to hit her with the latter’s sandal.

The incident took place recently in the labour room of the DHH where a patient from Bandabag village, under Thuamul Ram Pur block, had been admitted for delivery.

Sangita alleged that Meher poked her face with a pen without any provocation or dispute, before taking off her sandal with an intention to hit her. Following the incident, Sangita allegedly went out of the labour room in tears.

"I had just muttered a few words when the patient was around. But  Hemangini madam got off from her from chair and pushed a pen into my face. She then raised her sandal at me, after which I left the room in tears," alleged Sangita.

Meanwhile, Pankajini Nayak, president of Kalahandi ASHA Worker Sangha claimed that this was not the first time Meher had misbehaved with an ASHA worker. “Many similar complaints had been made against her in the past,” she said.

Pakanjini said that the Sangha will be filing a complaint with the police in addition to the complaint Sangita has already lodged at the CDMO’s office. “If no action against is initiated against the doctor will be forced to hit the streets,” she warned.

Meanwhile, the Additional District Medical Officer (ADMO), Kalahandi said he learnt about the incident in the labour room from others. However, he is yet to come across an official complaint in that regard. “We will conduct a probe in the matter and action will be taken against the doctor if she was found guilty,” he said.
