Ghayal, Dil, Bajirao Mastani, Dilwale
Dunki has opened to mixed reactions and Salaar is also receiving very good responses in the Southern states. It has been a box-office clash that everyone has been looking for. While usually only one movie gets most of the attention, there is always a possibility that both movies will do well. There have been such incidences in the past when both movies have done very well or only one movie has become a very big hit.
Know more about such box-office clashes in the past and who won the battle:
During the 90s both Sunny Deol and Aamir Khan were big stars. Dil had the dream pair of Madhuri Dixit and Aamir whereas Ghayal was a movie directed by first-timer Rajkumar Santoshi. It was certainly a big box-office clash but surprisingly both the movies did very well commercially. Incidentally, Ghayal won the National Award for Best Movie in the Popular category and also won 7 Filmfare awards.
Do you know why Ajay Devgn has never been cast in any YRF movie? It is because, in the epic box-office clash between his debut movie Phool Aur Kaante and YRF’s Lamhe, his film directed by Kuku Kohli became a super hit. On the other hand, Lamhe which was a dream project for Yash Chopra as he was directing Sridevi in a double role with Anil Kapoor as the male lead, failed to attract the audience. The only saving grace for Lamhe was the business it did overseas.
But it was the newcomer Ajay Devgn’s movie that won this battle and the industry also got one of its biggest superstars.
Once again it was a clash between Aamir Khan and Sunny Deol. Aamir turned producer with this film and the stakes were very high for him. On the other hand, Sunny had started losing his grip on the box office and desperately needed a hit. Fortunately both the movies turned out to be big blockbusters.
Gadar got the commercial edge as it earned more money but Lagaan went on to become an all-time classic winning critical acclaim.
After Chennai Express, expectations were high from this team of Shah Rukh Khan and Rohit Shetty. Moreover, the hit pair of Kajol and SRK were teaming up after a long gap for Dilwale. Simultaneously, Sanjay Leela Bhansali was ready with his magnum opus Bajirao Mastani starring his hit jodi from Goliyon Ki Rasleela-Ram-Leela-Ranveer Singh and Deepika Padukone.
For the first time, the Kajol-SRK pair failed to work and it was SLB’s cinematic grandeur and storytelling that won the battle at the box office.
Prashanth Neel and Yash were not much known across pan India in 2018 whereas Shah Rukh Khan, Anushka Sharma, and Katrina Kaif were big names. Moreover, Zero was directed by renowned filmmaker Aanand L Rai. The last movie of SRK-Jab Harry Met Sejal was a big flop. But no one thought that Zero would be such a dud.
On the other hand with KGF 1, both Neel and Yash became pan-India sensations thus proving once again that in the film industry, no one can guarantee success or failure.
