Alia Bhatt
Alia Bhatt turned heads at the 78th Cannes Film Festival closing ceremony on Saturday, May 23, 2025, as she graced the red carpet in what is being widely regarded as Gucci’s first-ever saree-inspired ensemble.
The look, drenched in Swarovski crystals and embroidered with Gucci's iconic GG monogram, marked a historic moment where Indian traditional wear met global high fashion on one of the world's biggest stages.
Though Gucci officially described the outfit as a “custom Gucci gown with embroidered crystals in a GG Monogram pattern,” fashion enthusiasts and fans were quick to note its resemblance to a saree.
Styled with a plunging neckline blouse, high-waisted fishtail skirt, and a dupatta-like drape over the shoulder that formed a trailing train, the silhouette stirred a debate online.
Some fashion insiders and pages, including Diet Sabya, hailed it as Gucci's first saree, while others questioned the classification. Comments like “This is a lehenga, not a saree” and “Is the sari in the room with us?” flooded Instagram, as users pointed out the outfit’s lehenga-like construction.
Despite the online debate, there's no denying that Alia Bhatt looked breathtaking. She exuded grace in the shimmering nude-toned outfit, styled minimally with a dainty choker, diamond earrings, and a cocktail ring. Her hair was left loose in soft waves, parted down the middle, perfectly complementing her subtle pink lips, blue-toned eye makeup, and flushed cheeks.
Her appearance on the red carpet was more than just about glamour—it was a cultural statement. The saree-inspired design, even if unconventional, served as a beautiful blend of heritage and haute couture, reflecting India’s rich fashion legacy on a global platform.
The Gucci ensemble was just one of several show-stopping looks Alia wore during her Cannes debut:
Opening Appearance: A dreamy pastel off-shoulder Schiaparelli gown made of soft Chantilly lace, styled by Rhea Kapoor, set the tone for her elegant Cannes journey.
L’Oréal Paris Event: At the Lights on Women’s Worth event, she wore a figure-hugging bejewelled Armani Privé gown from the Spring/Summer 2025 collection, adorned with shimmering embellishments and a cluster of blue gemstones at the bodice. A matching headpiece elevated the ethereal look.
Gucci Co-ord Look: Earlier that day, she also stunned in a bright mustard yellow co-ord set featuring a high-waisted pencil skirt, a structured bustier, and a cropped jacket—another nod to vintage Hollywood glamour.
