Amitabh Bachchan in Sarkar
The Godfather by Mario Puzo is one of the most-read books in the world. It was a big hit with the readers and later on was adapted as a movie. The influence and fascination of The Godfather has been so huge on generations together that even today, many Hollywood movies as well as Bollywood flicks have certain portions inspired by a few scenes in the original movie.
Sarkar, directed by Ram Gopal Varma, was inspired by The Godfather, with Amitabh Bachchan and Abhishek Bachchan in the lead.
Sarkar was a political crime thriller that had Kay Kay Menon as well as Supriya Pathak also in important roles apart from the Senior and Junior Bachchan. Katrina Kaif, Ravi Kale, and Zakir Hussain were also a part of the movie that revolved around the life of a powerful don in Mumbai who had his own sense of justice that many times was against the law and legalities.
Amitabh Bachchan played the role of Subhash Nagre, a character inspired by Vito Corleone from The Godfather.
The first choice for the male leads was Naseeruddin Shah and Sanjay Dutt – the roles that eventually were played by Amitabh and Abhishek Bachchan, respectively. At that time, it was titled Nayak. But Ram Gopal Varma had to shelve the film after Sanjay Dutt was arrested.
Later on, he revived the project as Sarkar.
Amitabh Bachchan and RGV collaborated for the first time with Sarkar. It was followed by many other movies, including Darna Zaroori Hai, Aag, Nishabd, Rann, Sarkar Raj, and Sarkar 3.
Sarkar was the first movie of Amitabh Bachchan and Abhishek that they had signed. But Bunty Aur Babli was released first and was followed by Sarkar. The simultaneous release of Sarkar and Bunty Aur Babli helped Abhishek Bachchan reach new levels of success.
The death scene of Amitabh Bachchan was not written properly. There were no dialogues. This gave Big B good scope to improvise according to his understanding, and RGV gave him full freedom.
