It is rightly said if there is a will there is a way. The proverb aptly fits Ganesh Baraiya, a 3-foot-tall doctor from Gujarat. Despite his short height, he battled all odds to become a doctor and serve his patients. His life journey showcases resilience and the triumph of perseverance.
Standing at just 3ft, he is potentially the world’s shortest doctor. His struggle in life began ever since his birth. However, he defied all odds studied well, and cleared the entrance exam for MBBS. Despite getting good marks in the entrance exam, he was denied admission to MBBS due to his height.
A determined Ganesh knocked on the doors of the Supreme Court and won the case. Now, an intern at Gujarat’s Bhavnagar Hospital, he is proud of himself and has dedicated his life to the service of his patients.
“The committee of Medical Council of India had rejected me saying that my height is 3 feet and I won't be able to handle emergency cases...With the direction of Bhavnagar collector, I went to Gujarat HC...after 2 months, we lost the case...then we went to Supreme Court and in 2018, Supreme Court verdict came that I can take MBBS admission in 2019,” recalled Ganesh while speaking to ANI.
A farmer’s son, Ganesh’s determination to become a doctor despite several challenges exemplifies resilience and determination in the face of adversity. Now, working as an intern doctor, he continues to inspire others with his unwavering commitment to medicine.
