Heatwave precaution: Guidelines for schools and colleges to be rolled out soon, says Odisha Minister

The new directives will specify the initiation timings for morning classes and outline safety measures for students against the rising temperatures.

A detailed set of guidelines regarding the handling of summer heat is anticipated to be issued within the next few days, which will be applicable for both schools and colleges in Odisha. Authorities from the School and Mass Education Department, the Higher Education Department, and other departments are in discussions to finalise these guidelines, informed Revenue Minister Suresh Pujari on Monday.

The new directives will specify the initiation timings for morning classes and outline safety measures for students against the rising temperatures.

Separate Heatwave Guidelines for General Public

Separate guidelines are also set to be released to the general public within the same timeframe. This is part of a broader initiative aimed at safeguarding the population during the intense summer months, a period characterised by extreme temperatures in many parts of India. The Revenue Minister has urged the public to adhere strictly to these forthcoming guidelines to ensure collective safety.

“The Revenue department conducts morning office hours and what steps will be taken regarding morning schools and their closure would be decided after consultation with the School and Mass Education Department and other departments soon,” said Pujari.

Rising Temperature in Odisha

It is pertinent to mention here that already several parts of Odisha are experiencing a rise in temperature for the last couple of days. At least ten places in Odisha recorded maximum temperature at 37 degrees Celsius or above on Sunday. Boudh district recorded the highest day temperature at 38.2°C on Sunday (March 2).

Odisha Weather: IMD Forecast

The Maximum temperature in most parts of Odisha could remain above normal during March, April, and May. 

However, in Western Odisha, particularly in Bolangir, Bargarh, Nuapada, Jharsuguda and Sundargarh, the probability of heat is more, said the IMD.
