The Veer Surendra Sai University of Technology (VSSUT) in Burla has suspended 2 students for two years while another 10 students have been rusticated for one year for allegedly ragging and physically harassing a third-year B.Tech student of the university.

The action was taken by the disciplinary committee of the VSSUT which called a video conference meet on Wednesday. The Registrar, Vice-Chancellor, 31 Professors of the university and the victim student were present during yesterday’s meeting.

The disciplinary committee also asked all the implicated students to leave the campus immediately yesterday and warned them with permanent termination of their studentship if they were found indulging in any unlawful activity in future.

The incident occurred in a hostel of the university at the midnight on September 22, 2021, while it came to the fore after the victim student and his father filed a complaint with the anti-ragging cell of the university and Dean Students' Welfare the next day.

Following the complaint, the disciplinary committee and anti-ragging cell of VSSUT had initiated a probe into the incident. The disciplinary panel had also questioned some third and fourth year B.Tech students, who were involved in the ragging incident.

All the 12 accused students had confessed to their involvement in the incident during an investigation by the committee.

As per the allegations, the complainant third year student was called into a room at the hostel by his class representative to resolve his dispute with a fellow student over some past enmity. The fellow student asked the complaint to show his mobile phone.

However, when he refused, the fellow student and the class representative called other final year students following which a heated argument ensued between the complainant and others. The situation turned worse after they attacked the complainant student who suffered grievous injuries on his face, back and hand.
