IAS Nisa Unnirajan
Meet Nisa Unnirajan, a 40-year-old mother of two young girls from Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala, who has become a beacon of perseverance by clearing the UPSC Civil Services Examination in her seventh attempt, securing an All India Rank (AIR) of 1000 in 2024. Her achievement is particularly inspiring as she balanced the demands of a full-time job, motherhood, and a hearing impairment.
Nisa's aspiration to join the civil services began at 35, a time when many consider stepping back from such rigorous pursuits. Working as an Assistant Audit Officer at the Principal Accountant General’s office in Kerala, she managed her professional responsibilities alongside raising her daughters, Nandana (11) and Thanvi (7). Her husband, Arun, a software engineer, along with her parents, provided unwavering support throughout her journey.
Despite the challenges posed by her hearing impairment, which made it difficult to engage with audio study materials, Nisa adapted her preparation methods. She utilized microlearning techniques, studying in short bursts during commutes, between household chores, and late at night. Her commitment to daily reading of newspapers and editorials kept her informed and prepared.
Nisa's journey underscores that age and physical challenges need not be barriers to achieving one's goals. Her story has garnered praise from various quarters, including a commendation from Thiruvananthapuram MP Shashi Tharoor, who lauded her determination and success.
Her accomplishment serves as a powerful reminder that with resilience and support, it's never too late to pursue and realize one's dreams.
