Palpable tension prevailed at Gadakana area in Bhubaneswar after a youth was allegedly stabbed to death following a clash between two groups on Saturday. The deceased has been identified as Niranjan Parida alias Chintu.

One of Chintu’s friends has also sustained critical injuries after they were allegedly attacked by four unidentified miscreants at a bakery shop at Press chhak area yesterday.  As per initial reports, Chintu along with some of his friends had gone to food kiosk for evening snacks.

It is alleged that the four other youths, who also arrived at the shop, picked up an argument with Chintu and his friends over some trivial matter. Later, the miscreants attacked Chintu and one of his friends with knives. Following the incident, both Chintu and his friend were rushed to a hospital. However, Chintu succumbed to his injuries while his friend is still undergoing treatment. His condition is said to be critical.

Sources said that all the accused hails from Nayapalli area.

“The deceased was having some food when the other group came and attacked them. There was no previous enmity between them,” said a local resident.

"We were having momos when an argument broke between us. Later, the opponent group assualted us and one of them attacked us with a knife. Later, they entered a shop nearby," said deceased Chintu's friend.

Local residents staged a road blockade demanding immediate arrest of the miscreants involved in the brutal murder. “We do not know what happened between the two groups leading to the stabbing incident. We want Commissionerate Police to conduct a detailed probe into the incident,” said another local resident.

Bhubaneswar Additional DCP, Prakash Chandra Pal said, “We are trying to identify the four persons involved in the incident. It appears that the incident occurred due to sudden provocation. One person has died in stabbing while one other has been injured.”

However, the Additional DCP ruled out any past enmity between the two groups.

Meanwhile, three of the accused have been detained by Saheed Nagar Police and they are being interrogated to ascertain the exact reason behind the murder.
