Three women, who were found hanging from a tree near Tohara village under Umerkote police limits in Nabarangpur district on Saturday night, were adults, informed Umerkote Tehsildar.

Refuting reports of two of the three women being minors, Tehsildar Jagat Jiban Choudhury said, “They all were above 18 years of age, so cannot call them minors.”

The deceased have been identified as Hemalata Gouda, Koushalya Majhi and Phulamati Majhi from Tohara village.

As per reports, the trio was spotted going towards the nearby jungle on Saturday evening.

Later, their family members made a frantic search after they did not return in the night and found them hanging from a tree. The reason of the death is yet to be confirmed.

Biswambar Majhi, a relative of the deceased said, “We were informed last evening about the women being missing since afternoon. After failing to locate them in the homes of friends and relatives, we searched in the jungle and found their bodies hanging from a tree.”

"Though by the look of it, anybody will assume it as a suicide, we cannot be sure of the actual reason unless the police say something,” Majhi said.

Meanwhile, the Umerkote police have sent the bodies for inquest. "We expect the Police will shed some more light on the incident after receiving the post-mortem report of the deceased," said a local.

Speaking to the reporters, Nabarangpur SP, PS Purusottam Das Said, "It is too early to say something on the deaths. We have registered three Unnatural Death (UD) cases in the umerkote police station following complaints by their relatives."
