A woman’s body was recovered allegedly five days after her death from her house at Basanti colony in Rourkela of Sundargarh district on Monday night, police said on Tuesday.

The police also rescued the deceased’s 35-year-old mentally challenged daughter from the house.

The cops identified the deceased as Manju Puri and her daughter Priyanka. Since Priyanka is said to be mentally challenged, she couldn’t say anything about her mother’s death, said police.

According to reports, Manju and Priyanka lived together in Basanti Colony. Manju’s three other daughters are staying in Delhi. It was May 18 when she last talked with her daughter over phone.

Manju’s neighbours got wary after not seeing her and her daughter for days together. Some of them informed the police apprehending something suspicious.

Upon reaching the spot, police broke open the house in presence of an executive magistrate and recovered Manju’s body besides rescuing Priyanka.

A probe has been launched into the case to ascertain the cause of the woman’s death.

“When we entered the house by breaking it open, we found the elderly woman lying dead and her mentally challenged daughter sleeping on a bed. It seemed to us her daughter had gone without food for three to four days,” said additional superintendent of police, Rourkela, Bikram Keshari Bhoi.

“After arrival of her other family members today, the post mortem will be performed. The mentally-challenged daughter has been admitted to a hospital,” Bhoi added.
