A woman allegedly thrashed her minor stepdaughter to death for spending Rs 20 to eat dahivada. The disturbing incident has been reported from Podasahi village under Fathegarh police limits in Nayagarh district.

The deceased has been identified as Tulasi (14), a class IX student.

According to sources, one Sukuta Swain of the village had married Manda Swain of Kalapangi village following the death of his first wife. Sukuta and his first wife had two daughters while he became father to a son with his second wife.

While Sukuta has given one of his daughters to the neighbours, his second wife Manda used to torture Tulasi every day, sources added.

Tulasi had eaten dahivada by spending Rs 20 on Tuesday. In a fit of rage, Manda started thrashing her on Wednesday morning causing her death on the spot.

Manda with the help of her family members was trying to cremate the body of Tulasi to destroy the evidence when police intercepted her and seized the body.

Meanwhile, the police have sent the body for autopsy and detained Manda acting on the complaint lodged by deceased Tulasi’s uncle.

“My brother-in-law’s second wife used to thrash Tulasi. She (Manda) thrashed her to death as Tulasi spent Rs 20 to eat dahivada. We demand stringent action against her,” alleged Braja Bandhu Swain, uncle of Tulasi.
