The police on Tuesday arrested a woman journalist on charges of issuing threats and extorting money from a contractor’s wife in Raighar Block of Nabarangpur district in Odisha.

Giving details of the action against the journalist at a press conference, Umerkote SDPO, Dinesh Nayak said that the accused, identified as Mamuni Chakraborty, had been produced in a court.

Police said, Mamuni worked as a Block correspondent for a web channel and a daily newspaper.
The police had received a complaint from Sumitra Nayak, a resident of Gona village and wife of Jagannath Nayak, accusing Mamuni of demanding Rs10,000 over an under construction Indira Awas house at Bijalipara village of Haladi Panchayat, failing which she would make a news on her husband and make it viral on social media platform. Sumitra’s husband is a contractor by profession.

“Sumitra lodged the complaint on Monday accusing Mamuni, a journalist, of extorting money from her. Following the registration of an offence on the basis of the complaint, the police arrested the woman journalist on Tuesday and forwarded her to a court the same day,” informed SDPO Nayak.

Sumitra told reporters that Mamuni had asked her to send her husband with the demanded ransom of Rs10,000, failing which she would make a negative news on him.
