Eight days after an elderly woman was murdered in her house in Khandagiri Bari area under Bharatpur police limits in Bhubaneswar, police on Tuesday arrested the deceased’s daughter-in-law for her involvement in the crime.

The accused has been identified as Baisakhi Palei.

Notably, on August 15, the police had recovered the body of Mada Palei from her house. The cops had also found Baisakhi in an unconscious state. She was admitted at the hospital.

After her recovery and discharge from the hospital, the police interrogated her and subsequently arrested her. During the interrogation, she told the police that she had gone to the toilet to wash her hands. On the basis of her statement, the police had to get the septic tank at the deceased’s house emptied for evidence collection. A cesspool emptying van was engaged for clearing the tank.

According to the police, when accused Baisakhi was sure that her mother-in-law had been aware of her extramarital affair, the former attacked the latter at her village Indragarh under Belaguntha police limits in Ganjam on July 1. In the attacks, she suffered a brain hemorrhage. She was then hospitalised. After treatment, doctors discharged her, saying she could speak normally after some days.

She was recovering at her son’s house in Khandagir Bari area. And, it was August 15 when Mada was fully recovered and able to talk. Baisakhi feared Mada might reveal everything before her son (Baisakhi’s husband). So she had decided to eliminate her.
