Wife No 19 Files Rs 20L Cheating Case Against Fake Odisha Doctor

Another chapter of crime committed by Ramesh Chandra Swain was exposed on Thursday when an Assamese woman lodged a complaint against the fake doctor at the Mahila police station in Bhubaneswar.

The woman, who was the 19th victim of Swain’s devious swindling trickery on pretext of marriage, has alleged that he had cheated her of Rs 20 lakh by coaxing her into marital relationship. 

The woman, a doctor by profession, has stated in her complaint that Swain had made an acquaintance with her through a matrimonial site (Shaadi.com) wherein he introduced himself as Vijayshree Ramesh Kumar. Their relationship grew and ended with their marriage at Kamaksha temple in Assam on May 31, 2021. 

After marriage, Swain had kept the female doctor in a rented accommodation in Khandagiri area. Later, on the pretext of buying a flat, he made her to give him more than Rs 20 lakh, she alleged. 

“At the time of my griha pravesh (entry into the new house), two women were already present in the house. He introduced them as his sister and step-mother. I went back to Assam after some time. After hearing the news of his arrest I realized that I have been duped. I would like to request all the victims to come forward and lodge complaints against the fraudster so that harsher punishment can be handed down to him,” said the victim.

Giving details of the case, the investigating officer at Mahila Police station, Santoshini Behera, said, “He (Ramesh Kumar) has confirmed about his marriage with the female doctor. Following her complaint,  we registered another offence against Ramesh Chandra Swain alias Vijayshree Ramesh Kumar. Our investigation is underway.”

Meanwhile, the statements of the female doctor, her father and brother were recorded in the court on Thursday. 

On the other hand, the Mahila Police has applied for seven days custodial remand of the fake doctor. They have plans to apply for the remand of his sister as well, sources said.

While the notorious cheat’s brother-in-law and driver are still at large, his second wife is under police scanner after landed properties admeasuring more than 4.5 acres were detected in her name. 

The imposter was arrested by the Commissionerate Police on charges of marrying and duping over 18 women across the country on February 14, based on a complaint lodged by a Delhi based woman school teacher. He has also been alleged of cheating other people and organisations by posing as a doctor. The fake doctor’s sister, identified as Rashmita Beura, was arrested from a farmhouse owned by the former in Khuntuni area of Cuttack on February 23. 

Notably, Swain’s relatives had informed police that he had not passed even matriculation exam. It is alleged that Swain had duped a youth of Rs 4 lakh by promising a staff nurse job under the Central government to his sister.
