Vigilance raid on RW dept chief engineer;  Over Rs 2 crore investment in share market, Rs 2.51 crore cash recovered

Senior officials informed that Rs 2.51 crore, including Rs 1.30 crore from the residential house of Sarangi at Angul and Rs 1.21 crore was recovered from his flat at Bhubaneswar.

Once again, the officials of Odisha Vigilance on Friday detected a major disproportionate assets (DA) case by recovering cash worth over Rs 2.51 crore during the searches on the properties linked to Baikuntha Nath Sarangi, posted as Chief Engineer, RW Department, Bhubaneswar, Odisha.

Sources said Sarangi was supposed to retire from service tomorrow (May 31).

What was detected during the raids

The Vigilance department today carried out multiple searches on the properties linked to  Baikuntha Nath Sarangi on the allegation of possession of disproportionate assets( DA) beyond his known sources of income.

The searches are being conducted by Odisha Vigilance, led by eight DSPs, 12 Inspectors, six ASIs, and other supporting staff on the strength of search warrants issued by Special Judge, Vigilance, Angul at his following 7 places in Angul, Bhubaneswar, Pipili (Puri).

On seeing the Vigilance officers, Sarangi allegedly threw cash bundles of Rs.500 notes through the window of his flat in Bhubaneswar.

Senior officials informed that Rs 2.51 crore, including Rs 1.30 crore from the residential house of Sarangi at Angul and Rs 1.21 crore was recovered from his flat at Bhubaneswar.

It has been learnt that Sarangi had invested Rs 2.70 crore in the share market as well. Two multi-storyed buildings, two flats, seven high-value plots, insurance, and bank deposits worth Rs 1.5 crore have also been detected during the Vigilance raids.

Assets unearthed in the name of Sarangi and his family members:

One double-storeyed residential building at Karadagadia, Angul.

Another double-storeyed building at Matiasahi, Angul.

Flat in PDN Exotica in Dumduma, Bhubaneswar.

Another flat in Siulawith with an area of 1100 Sqft

7 plots on the outskirts of Bhubaneswar and Angul. The measurement and valuation/assessment of the above buildings/flats/ plots are being carried out by the Vigilance Technical Wing. 

Cash Rs 2.51 Crore (Rs 1.30 Crore unearthed from residential house at Angul& Rs 1.21 Crore from flat at Bhubaneswar).

Investment in the share market is approximately Rs 2.70 Crore.

Bank and Insurance deposits Rs 1.5 Crore.

One locker maintained at Axis Bank, Angul, in the name of his wife is still to be opened.
