Bhawanipatna: In a clear case of ‘fence eating crops’, a Public Prosecutor appearing for the State Vigilance Department was caught while he was accepting a bribe from an accused to hush up a case in the vigilance court on Saturday.

Ashutosh Mishra, Special Public Prosecutor at the special Vigilance Court, Bhawanipatna was caught red-handed by the officers of Vigilance Cell Division, Cuttack while he was accepting Rs 1 lakh bribe from an Assistant Sub-inspector who was earlier arrested by the anti-graft agency in a bribery case.

The bribe amount has been recovered and seized from the accused lawyer. The residence of the accused at Radhakrishna Nagar in Bhawanipatna has been searched on charges of accumulating assets disproportionate to his known sources of income, Vigilance sources said.

During search, vigilance officials recovered Rs 15 lakh cash and other valuables from his residence, officials said. Mishra has been arrested and produced before court, they added.

The Vigilance sleuths have registered a case in this connection. Further investigation is underway, a communication issued by the anti-graft wing stated.

As per information, former ASI of Mahulapatna police outpost Malay Kumar Rana had been arrested by the Vigilance in a corruption case and was suspended later.

Mishra had allegedly demanded the bribe from Rana in order to help the later who was charge-sheeted in a vigilance case..
