After failing to repay a loan amount of Rs 5000, a man allegedly sold his two and half years old daughter in Jajpur district of Odisha.

As per reports, the accused had burrowed Rs 5000 from one Litu Jena of Sahadevpur in Binjharpur area in the district. Later, unable to repay the money, he handed over his minor daughter to settle the debt amount.

The matter came to light after the grandfather of the girl lodged an FIR against the accused and his son. Acting on the complaint, police has reportedly rescued the girl.

"I lodged an FIR against my son after he sold his daughter to some Litu Jena in Bhinjharpur. I came to know that police have rescued my granddaughter from that person and they will hand over her to me soon," said the complainant, Rabindra Barik.

Meanwhile, the district child protection officer Niranjan Kar informed that the condition of the little girl is fine and the child welfare committee will look into it. 

"Police is investigating the matter to ascertain as to under what circumstances the child was handed over to some other person by her parents. For the time being, ensuring the safety of the child, we will hand over her to the child welfare committee," Kar added.
