Two persons were brutally murdered over suspicion of practicing witchcraft at two separate places in Kendrapara and Sambalpur districts.

In the first incident, Aju Maharana and his two sons-Bipin Maharana and Gunua Maharana broke open the door of the house of Mani Charan Sahu (55), who was their neighbour, and attacked him and his wife with a crowbar at Haranabebi village under Pattamundai block in Kendrapara district on Monday. 

Hearing the cries of Mani, family members and neighbours came to his rescue. They immediately rushed a profusely bleeding Mani to Pattamundai government hospital. From there, he was shifted to SCB Medical College and Hospital. However, the doctors there declared him received dead. 

The deceased’s family members lodged a complaint with the Pattamundai rural police station. Registering a case, the police have launched a probe.  However, no arrest has so far been made. 

In the second incident which was reported from Dimirikuda village under Kisinda police limits in Sambalpur district, four persons attacked a man and his wife with axes, leading to the death of the person. The deceased’s wife could save herself as she managed to escape and run into the nearby forest. The police have launched a probe into the case.
