Police on Thursday arrested two persons on charges of illegally selling school textbooks in Nayagarh district.

The arrested persons have been identified as Sambit Patra of Bandhamuhin village and Arjun Rout of Bahadajhola village.

A transport company named Maa Ogalamani Transport was entrusted with the job of distributing textbooks in Odagaon in Nayagarh district and in Jagannathprasad block in Ganjam district.

Patra, who worked as the driver of the transport company, would bring books from the depot and sell them to Rout.

On the basis of allegations against the duo, the police had detained them and during interrogation, they admitted to their crime.

The Odagaon Police produced them in a local court and has launched a detailed probe.

“After delivering books at Odagaon, he (Patra) called me to inform that he was going to Jagannathprasad. Thereafter he didn’t receive my calls. Later, I came to know that he was selling the books to a junk dealer and was arrested,” said the manager of Maa Ogalamani Transport, Ganesh Nayak.

When contacted, Odagaon Model Police Station IIC Purnachandra Pattayat said over the phone, “The driver loaded the books at the depot in Bhubaneswar and distributed the books at a school in Odagaon. Then, he was to go to Jagannathprasad. But instead of going to Jagannathprasad, he went to Bahadajhola village and sold some books to a junk dealer. Some local villagers noticed this and informed us. Subsequently, we reached the spot, seized the books and vehicle, and arrested the duo.”
