Raid near educational institutions in Bhubaneswar

In a determined move to curb the growing menace of narcotics near educational institutions in Bhubaneswar, the Special Task Force (STF) of Odisha Police on Tuesday launched surprise raids in key areas of the capital city.

STF teams carried out coordinated operations in the Patia and Khandagiri areas, both known for housing prominent educational institutions, including universities and colleges. The raids specifically targeted small shops and kiosks located near college campuses, suspected of selling illicit substances to students and youth.

According to sources, the STF acted on credible intelligence inputs regarding the sale of brown sugar and ganja (cannabis) in and around these areas. The operation is part of STF’s zero-tolerance policy towards drugs, especially in student-sensitive zones.

Officers said they suspect some vendors near the campuses were covertly involved in peddling narcotics, luring vulnerable youngsters into addiction.

“The focus is on breaking the supply chain before it affects student communities,” said an official involved in the operation.

During the raids, several shops were thoroughly searched and samples were collected for further forensic testing. Though details of arrests or seizures are yet to be officially confirmed, sources indicate that the crackdown yielded crucial leads.

This is not the first such operation in Bhubaneswar. A few days ago, the Special Crime Unit had also conducted similar raids around educational clusters, suggesting a systematic effort by law enforcement agencies to clean up college-adjacent areas from illegal drug trade.

Officials reiterated that strict action will be taken against anyone found guilty of drug peddling, and routine checks will continue in such zones to deter illegal activities.

With college elections around the corner and campuses bustling with activity, the raids come at a critical time when the authorities are keen on ensuring a safe and drug-free environment for students.
