A district court on Monday convicted Sheikh Qadir alias Munna, son of late gangster Sheikh Hyder, in a 2013 murder case and sentenced him to life imprisonment. 

District and sessions judge Gopal Chandra Behera found Munna guilty of murder of Shahnawaz Khan, a fertiliser businessman from Aul area in Kendrapara district in 2013. 

Eight other accused involved in the case were acquitted by the court due to lack of adequate evidence against them. 

“On the basis of the all the evidence and witnesses, District and sessions judge Gopal Chandra Behera convicted Sheikh Munna. Others were acquitted due to lack of evidence,” public persecutor Manas Ranjan Behera said after the pronouncement of verdict by the court.   

“Under IPC Section 302, he was sentenced to undergo life imprisonment. The court also imposed a penalty of Rs 10,000 on him. Failure to pay the fine amount will invite additional imprisonment of one year,” Behera added.  

In 2013, Munna shot dead fertiliser businessman Shahnawaz Khan at thge latter’s shop in Aul in Kendrapara district after failing to extort money from him. 

Munna had been involved in several criminal activities like extortion, murder threat, tender fixing, bombing, loot and murder. As many as 30 cases are pending against him at different police stations across the State. 

Munna’s father SK Hyder, who was also facing a series of criminal cases including murder, extortion and tender fixing, died on July 24 after sustaining gunshot injuries while allegedly trying to flee police custody.
