Berhampur Police on Friday busted an illegal sex determination racket in the city and arrested 12 persons in this connection, including the main accused.

As per reports, the prime accused Durga Prasad Nayak along with his relatives Hari Dalai and Akshay Dalai and others was running this centre for past few years. They were running the interstate ultrasound racket to determine whether the fetuses of pregnant women were male or female.

Acting on an intelligence input, a joint team of Berhampur Police, district administration and Health Department raided the clinic and arrested the accused red-handed.

The police seized one ultrasound machine, medicines, a mobile phone and other equipment during the raid.

“A portable ultrasound machine, which is banned in India since 2005, has been recovered from the prime accused who was running this racket along with others,” said Berhampur SP Saravana Vivek M.

“The accused was conducting sex selection at that time of raid and some pregnant women were present in the center. He had been running the illegal sex selection centre for over two-three years,” he added.
