A five-year-old girl was allegedly raped by a man in the Town Police station area of Puri on Sunday triggering widespread dismay in the pilgrim town. 

According to sources, the accused, stated to be an acquaintance to the family of the victim, reportedly took the girl, while she was playing near her house, to the rooftop of a house and raped her at around 11 am yesterday (January 23). 

When the girl’s mother rushed to the rooftop after hearing her screaming, the accused reportedly fled from the spot. 

The minor girl was initially admitted for treatment at Puri district headquarters hospital where her medical examination was also conducted. She was later shifted to a hospital in Cuttack where she is currently under cure. Her condition is stated to be stable.

Meanwhile, taking serious note of the case, the Town Police has registered a case under relevant Sections of IPC and POCSO Act before launched a quest into the incident. 

As many as four teams have been formed and manhunt is underway to nab the accused, a driver by profession, who is on the run. 

As the accused hails from Jagatsinghpur, a team has been mobilized to search him in his native district. Similarly, another team has been deputed to Chandanpur and Chhaitana area of Gop block where the relatives of the accused lived. Moreover, two teams have been carrying out raids at different places in the Puri town. However, there has been no trace of the accused so far.
