Berhampur police has busted an organised gang involved in burglary and disposing of stolen gold ornaments by arresting four persons, including the branch manager of a gold loan finance company and two goldsmiths.

The gang was busted by police while probing a burglary case in which the miscreants had decamped with gold ornaments from the house of one Kali Panda on September 21.

Berhampur SP said that a case was subsequently registered and one Sania Gauda was detained after getting some clue regarding his involvement. During interrogation, Sania revealed that he had deposited gold with Mohan Padhi, the branch manager of a gold finance company.

“After detaining Padhi, he gave information about a shop where old and stolen gold was being melted. We have seized 2.7 kg gold from the goldsmith identified as Santosh Gaikwad,” said Berhampur SP.

The SP further informed that during further investigation, the involvement of another jeweller Surendra Mohapatra was ascertained. “We later seized 400 grams of silver and unaccounted cash to the tune of Rs 26 lakh cash. We will ask the I-T department to conduct further investigation. Two persons are still absconding,” the SP added.
