In yet another development in the investigation into the series of crimes committed by arrested Matric fail fake doctor Ramesh Chandra Swain, who has been accused of duping as many as 18 women after marrying them, the Commissionerate police on Tuesday raided a house at Iswarpur area in Kendrapara and picked up his sister for questioning.

A special squad has brought Ramesh’s sister Rashmita Beura to Bhubaneswar for quizzing her in connection with her alleged involvement in the frauds committed by her brother. She has been kept at an undisclosed location where she will be questioned. Significantly, other members of her family managed to escape from the house during the police raid.

Police sources said that Rashmita was one of the key associates of Ramesh and she used to help her brother in perpetrating the frauds. She used to receive a good amount of money and a number of jewelleries for helping Ramesh in the crimes.

"His (Ramesh Swain) sister used to keep all gold jewellery with her. He used to spend the money to buy farmhouses and other things. Besides, he also used to distribute the money between them," a complainant alleged.

"Ramesh bought saplings worth Rs 4 lakh from me and gave me a cheque. But the cheque got bounced. When I tried to reach him over the phone, I found his phone switched off," alleged Venkat Raman, a nursery businessman who was duped by Swain.

Earlier, Swain was arrested by the Commissionerate Police on charges of duping a Delhi-based teacher. During the probe, it was found that he had married 18 women across the country and duped them of lakhs of rupees by posing as a senior official with the Health department. He also cheated other people and organisations by posing as a doctor.

It is alleged that Swain had duped a youth of Rs 4 lakh by promising a staff nurse job to the latter’s sister under the Central government.

Prior to his arrest by the Commissionerate police, Swain was arrested by the Hyderabad Special Task Force for allegedly duping several unemployed youths and MBBS aspirants to the tune of Rs 2 crore in 2011.

"Several people are associated with Ramesh. Some people have alleged his sister's involvement in several cheating cases." Bhubaneswar DCP Umashankar Dash said.
