  • Gangster Hyder succumbed to bullet injuries suffered in police encounter
  • The slain gangster's wife accused police of staging her husband’s killing

Hours after Sheikh Hyder succumbed to bullet injuries following an ‘encounter’, the widow of the slain gangster accused the police of staging her husband’s killing.

“Police took my husband out of the jail and killed him mid-way claiming that he made escape attempts. The jailer and others were involved in the killing,” she alleged.

Justifying her claims, the gangster’s wife said the police usually target the legs when an accused attempts to flee from their custody. “Heart and head has never been the target during police encounters,” she said.

She said her husband was in jail for the past 16 years and she extended all cooperation to the police in the investigation when he escaped from SCB Medical College and Hospital a few months back.

“Suddenly, the police took him out of the jail without our knowledge and killed him. We learnt the news of his death from TV,” she added.

“The government is responsible for the death of my husband. I want justice,” she added.

Police said that Hyder was being shifted from Choudwar jail to Baripada jail earlier today. He tried to snatch the guns of the cops and flee near Simulia prompting police to fire at him. He succumbed to bullet injuries later in a hospital at Balasore.

ADMO, Balasore, Mrutyunjay Mishra said, “The patient (Hyder) had arrived at the casualty wing of the hospital in a critical and ‘gasping condition’. He died within four to five minutes upon arrival.” Mishra said the post-mortem of the patient will ascertain how many bullets he was fired at. The post mortem is likely to be conducted tomorrow.
