Continuing the crackdown against the sale and smuggling of narcotics in the Twin cities of Cuttack and Bhubaneswar, the Commissionerate Police on Thursday seized around 273 grams of brown sugar and arrested two peddlers in this connection during a raid at Hi-Tech square in Bhubaneswar.

The arrested peddlers have been identified as Manmatha Swain from Gobindapur area of Cuttack and Pramod Mallick from Laxmi Sagar area in Bhubaneswar.

Acting on a tip-off, the Mancheswar police conducted a raid at a hideout in the morning and nabbed the peddlers red-handed when they were about to strike a deal. Along with the contraband, a mobile phone and a bike were also seized from their possession.

“The accused have been booked under relevant Sections of the NDPS Act and further investigation is underway into the incident,” said a police official.

Notably, the Odisha police, under the special drive, code named, ‘White Spider’, have seized 2kg 223 grams of brown sugar in the last three and half months. As many as 38 drug peddlers have been arrested in this connection and a total of 16 cases under the NDPS act have been registered against them. Apart from a total of Rs 4,81,270 in cash, two bikes, 15 mobile phones and other incriminating materials have been seized from their possession.

Earlier last month, a joint team of Jaleswar Excise Department and police had seized brown sugar worth around Rs 55 lakh under their jurisdiction in Balasore district . As many as four persons had been arrested in that connection.
