Hansapur under Chhatrapur police limits in Ganjam district virtually turned into a battleground on Monday after protests by local residents over the murder of a businessman and subsequent suicide of his fiancée turned violent.

As per reports, a large number of angry protesters who were agitating against the murder of Krushna Chandra Parida, a cement trader, pelted stones at the police personnel who arrived at the spot to control the situation and also ransacked their vehicle.

Irked locals reportedly chased mediapersons and the camera crew who were there to cover the news and snatched their cameras and mobile phones.

Businessman Krushna Chandra Parida was brutally beaten to death near Hansapur late Friday night. The woman who was supposed to marry him attempted to end her life by consuming poison during a protest near Hansapur chhak demanding arrest of the prime accused.

She was immediately rushed to Maharaja Krushna Chandra Gajapati Medical College and Hospital in Berhampur in a critical condition. However, she died while undergoing treatment.
