The Special Task Force (STF) of Odisha Police nabbed two drug peddlers from Ghatipiri village in Denkanal on Tuesday and recovered 1.9 Kg of brown sugar from them.

The peddlers have been identified as Rakesh Sahu, alias Kalu and Santosh Sahu.

Acting on a tip off, a special team of the STF raided a house in the village and recovered the illegal substance before the consignment was sold to potential customers.

Addressing a press conference, Tejaraj Patel, the SP, STF said, “The accused have been booked under Section 21 (C) and 29 of NDPS Act and forwarded to the court for remand.”

Speaking about the source and transit of the contraband, Patel said, “The brown sugar consignment found its way to Dhenkanal from Jaleswar and Balasore. But it will be premature to say the source of the drugs. We will be able to shed some more light on it only after further investigation.”

It is pertinent to mention here that the STF has seized more than 45 Kgs of brown sugar and 86 quintals of ganja so far this year. The STF has also arrested more than 100 peddlers in connection with the seizures, informed Patel.

As per a data revealed in the Odisha Assembly, while the quantity of brown sugar seized from Odisha was only 5.61 Kg in 2019, in 2020 the quantity increased to 39.5 Kg. And in 2021, 45.28 Kgs of the contraband has been seized till October.
