Ahead of the panchayat elections, Odisha police seemed to be tightening screws on anti-social elements to rein in the law and order situation in the State. 

In a major achievement, the State Police has successfully arrested as many as 3488 fugitives from different parts of the State during a special drive in only 10 days.

As per reports, Odisha Police had conducted a special warrant drive to nab the fugitives with non-bailable warrants. The special drive was conducted from November 5 to 14. A total of 3488 warrants were executed by arresting the accused persons. 

Of the total warrants/arrest, 2392 were under GR cases while 400 cases were sessions trial cases and 696 other cases. 

The highest number of warrants were executed with 592 arrests in Balasore district, followed by Ganjam district with 551 and Khordha with 516 arrests.

During a presser, the Director General of police (DGP) Abhay said, "Odisha police had launched a special drive for the execution of non-bailable warrants. Many persons who are accused, suspects and are facing trials, skip it or jump the bail duration. Among them, many fail to appear at the Court during the hearing of cases. Under such circumstances, the Court issues non-bailable warrants against such people."

"In this special drive, we have achieved success in arresting 3488 fugitives with non-bailable warrants and produced them before the concerned Courts," he added.

The DGP chief applauded the achievement of the entire department and congratulated the staff who were a part of the drive.
