Police arrested a man on charges of killing his three-year-old stepson at Kundei in Nabarangpur village on Monday.

The arrest was made on the basis of the complaint lodged by none other than his wife and the mother of the deceased. She accused her husband of killing her son by administering poison instead of cough syrup.

According to the complaint, Biswanath Gond of Kundei area and Gayatri Gond, a resident of Jadapara village, fell in love and married three months ago. Prior to marriage, Gayatri had a three-year-old son out of her previous relationship.

The child was ill for the last two days. He had fever and cough. Gayatri asked Biswanath, who worked as a quack in the village, to give him some medicine. Biswanath administered certain syrup to the child at 11 am. A few moments later, the child complained of vomiting. And at around 3 pm, he breathed his last.

Suspecting Biswanath of killing her son by administering poison, she lodged a complaint at Kundei police station. On being informed, police reached the village, recovered the body and sent it to the police station. The cough syrup bottle was also seized from the house.

They arrested Biswanath from the border of Chhattisgarh while trying to sneak into the neighbouring State.

Informing about the crime, Kundei IIC Prashant Kumar Sethi said, “Two days ago, the child fell ill. He was suffering from fever and cough. Biswanath gave him a portion of certain cough syrup at 11 am. The child developed symptoms of vomiting and subsequently died at 3 pm. It was suspected that he might have mixed some poisonous substance with the syrup before the administration. He was court forwarded today.”
