Rourkela: Police today claimed to have arrested five drug peddlers allegedly involved in brown sugar and Ganja trade in the city on Friday.

Two were involved in Ganja smuggling while three others were arrested for trading brown sugar in separate incidents in the city.

The brown sugar smugglers were doing illegal business at Gandhi road area under Plant Site police station. Police have seized around 19-gram contraband from them.

Three others were arrested for supplying ganja at Power House Road in the city. Around 17 kg ganja has been seized from their possession. A number of cases are pending in different police stations in the city, additional SP Bikram Keshari Bhoi said

“We have arrested two ganja smugglers identified as Bibek Mohanty, Mahesh Mohapatra and seized 16.928 kg ganja from them. Two mobile phones and Rs 1500 cash have been recovered from them. The duo will be forwarded to court today,” he said.

“In the seizure of brown sugar, we have arrested three persons identified as MD Ali Hussain, Sonu Sarkar and MD Afsar. Brown sugar weighing 18.32 grams has been recovered from them. The estimated value of the seized contraband would be around Rs 1 lakh,” the additional SP said.

Two mobile phones and Rs 9000 cash have been seized from them. They will also be forwarded to court today, he added.

Earlier in 2018, the Plant Site Police had arrested a woman drug peddler and seized the contraband from her worth Rs 2 lakh with over Rs 1 lakh cash. The woman identified as Nuresa Khatun was doing the business in the same locality.
