Ex-MLA and former BJD Leader Anup Sai was awarded life imprisonment in connection with the sensational double murder of a woman and her daughter in 2016, by a Chhattisgarh court on Saturday.

Burdhan Toppo, another accused, who was also arrested in connection with the case, has been acquitted by the Raigarh District And Sessions Court in Chhattisgarh. Toppo was working as the driver of the former MLA from Brajarajnagar.

Both Sai and his driver were arrested by the Chhattisgarh police in February 2020 on the charges of murdering one Kalpana and her minor daughter Bubli near Hamirpur forest in Chhattisgarh’s Raigarh district in 2016.

Though the ex-MLA only wanted to kill Kalpana, later he killed her daughter fearing that she would expose him, police had then said.

The accused former MLA Anup Sai was booked under section 302, 201, 120(B) and 34 of the IPC

Public prosecutor Deepak Sharma said, “The trial began in 2020 and the court had recorded the statement of 50 witnesses on the basis of which Sai was found guilty in the double murder.”

Sai was allegedly into an illicit relationship with Kalpana since 2011. Sai conspired to eliminate Kalpana after she started to insist on marriage.

In May 6, 2016, Raigarh police had recovered the disfigued bodies of a woman and a girl and later the deceased were identified as Kalpana and her 14-year-old daughter after DNA test.
