The inspector-in-charge of Narayanpatna police station in Koraput district has been placed under suspension in connection with a case pertaining to loot of mortgaged gold ornaments from the locker of State Bank of India’s Laxmipur branch.

The IIC, Ranjit Sahu, has been suspended with immediate effect by the Director General of Police (DGP) of Odisha, Sunil Kumar Bansal for dereliction of duty.

It was learnt that Sahu had knowledge of two accused linked to the gold ornament loot case that occurred in November last year, but he chose not to take any action against them.

Apart from Sahu, a home guard of the police station, Gopal Reddy also faced action in connection with the case.

It was learnt that both the robber and the person who purchased the stolen gold ornaments hail from Narayanpatna.

It may be recalled that gold ornament weighing 1.6 kg was looted from the locker of SBI’s Laxmipur branch in November 2021. A formal complaint in connection with the incident was registered in January this year by the branch manager.

In course of investigation, it was learnt that Sekhar Kuldipiya, who worked as a messenger of the SBI Laxmipur between 2014 and August 2020, had singlehandedly executed the loot.

On November 30, Sekhar had entered the bank branch at around 3 pm and managed to hide inside the server room. Later, he stole 21 packets mortgaged gold ornaments by using the keys of strong room.
