Bolangir Police on Thursday solved the mystery surrounding the murder of a constable after arresting six persons including two from Jharkhand for their alleged involvement in the murder case. The victim has been identified as Shankarbhanu Behera, a constable attached to a police station in Sonepur.

The arrested persons have been identified as Pankaj Kumar and Suraj Kumar Barnwal, both from Jharkhand; Krushna Meher from Angul, Manoranjan Sathua from Boudh, Nitai Kar from Sonepur and Rohit Sa from Patnagarh area in Bolangir district. The accused were produced in a court.

According to sources, the accused persons and the victim were involved in the illegal trade of precious stones and diamonds. They had given some money to Behera to procure precious stones including diamonds for them. On May 16, they had called Behera to Room No-212 of Hotel Indraprastha, located near the Bolangir Railway Station where they killed him and fled from the spot with the booty. 

Informing about the development, Bolangir SP Rishikesh Khilari said, “The arrested persons were involved in an illegal trade of precious stones and diamonds. They had given a sum to the deceased as the latter had promised the former to supply diamonds and some precious stones to them. On the day of the incident, they called him to Hotel Indraprastha, assaulted him there and decamped with the booty.”
