The body of the Sarpanch of Kadua Gram Panchayat under Dhenkanal’s Kamakhyanagar block was found hanging from a tree in the Namajodi jungle in Mahulapal village on Friday morning.

The deceased Sarpanch, Bibekananda Mahakud, was reportedly missing since afternoon on December 7.

As per reports, the residents of Bijadihi village found Mahakud hanging from a tree and informed the police, following which a team from the Kamakhyanagar Police station reached the spot and sent the body for post mortem.

While the police are yet to make any statement over the death, Mahakud’s family members have alleged that he was a victim of political rivalry.

An inconsolable Arbind Mahakud, the brother of the deceased, said, “My brother was missing since last four days. I am sure somebody has murdered him before hanging his body from a tree to make it look like a suicide.”

“My brother never comes to this side of the jungle. The way the body was hanging, there is no doubt that he had been murdered,” he alleged.

Similarly, the uncle of the deceased, Debaraj Mahakud, said, “Blood was dripping from his mouth. It is definitely a political murder.”

The Kamakhyanagar Police has launched a probe in this connection to ascertain the actual cause of Mahakud’s death.
