Amidst massive state-wide outrage over the murder of young school teacher Mamita Meher, the National Commission for Women on Wednesday urged Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik to remove the Ministers, whose names have surfaced in the case, to ensure a fair probe.

The chairperson of the commission has written to CM Naveen to personally take cognizance of this case.

“The National Commission for Women has taken cognizance of the incident. Chairperson Rekha Sharma has written to Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik to personally take cognizance of this case & to remove the accused Ministers so that a fair police investigation can be conducted in the matter,” the NCW tweeted.

The Commission has also shot off a letter the Director General of Police (DGP) Abhay to immediately arrest all the accused involved in the case and provide safety to the family of the victim.

“NCW has also written to DGP, Odisha to immediately arrest all the accused and to provide safety to the family of the victim,” the NCW stated in the tweet.

“NCW has asked for completing the investigation in a time bound manner. The action taken must be apprised to the Commission at the earliest,” the NCW added.

Notably, Mamita, who used to teach at Sunshine English Medium School in Mahaling under the Sindhelkela Police limits of Kalahandi district had gone missing under mysterious circumstances earlier this month.

Today, Northern Range DIG Deepak Kumar told media that the main accused Gobinda Sahu had killed Mamita inside his car.

Earlier in the day, the Odisha State Commission for Women (OSCW) sought a detailed report of the case from the Kalahandi SP. Terming the murder as ‘shameful’, the panel directed the office of the Kalahandi SP to furnish a detailed report within 15 days.
