The recent attack on two persons which resulted in the death of one of them has brought the focus back on the illegal sand mining in Tangi area of Cuttack. The deceased identified as Happy and his associate Dipak Behera were attacked by a group near Jaripada on Gobindpur road on Sunday.

Happy succumbed to his injuries while Dipak is undergoing treatment. Though Tangi police arrested two persons including Sushant Behera alias Mitu, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) alleged the involvement of several influential people in the incident.

The saffron party has alleged that the accused and others are very close to Salepur MLA Prashant Behera. At a presser, former Salepur MLA and BJP leader Prakash Behera alleged that all the illegal sand mining activities are being orchestrated at the behest of MLA Prashant Behera.

“The accused and others involved in the incident are directly linked with BJD and they are referred as the bodyguards of the local MLA,” alleged Prakash Behera.

Dipak, who sustained multiple injuries in the attack said, “Mitu, Tutu and Sendha master attacked me and Happy and he died on the spot.”

Deceased Happy’s wife Subhasmita said, “My husband always used to tell me to keep doors and windows closed as he apprehended threats to his life.”

Choudwar SDPO, Satyabrat Lenka said, “Many other persons are involved. We have identified three more persons. The FIR has been registered against five persons. Our investigation is underway and we will take appropriate steps if we get information and clues regarding the involvement of any other person.”
