Capital city Bhubaneswar woke up to a string of crime incidents on the first day of the New Year today.

While a murder in Sundarpada, recovery of an unidentified body from a canal in Chakeisiani area and the recovery of an MBA student’s body from hostel room sent shockwaves across the city, another shocking incident of an elderly woman and her son having been kept under house arrest in a building behind Priyadarshini Market in CRP Square area left citizens shocked.

As per reports, Anusuya Mohanty (76) and her middle-aged son Mrutyunjay have been under house arrest for six days now. The reason is said to be a long-standing legal dispute they have with another family that used to live in the same building over the ownership of the said building.

The mother-son duo lives in a building behind the Priyadarshini Market in CRP area. Another woman and her family used to live in the same building. The families are caught in a legal battle over the ownership of the building.

Anusuya and her son alleged that the woman and her family had kept them under lock and key. Showing some documents to visitors and authorities, the rival family also claimed that they are the legitimate owners of the building.

“The New Year has arrived but we are kept in confinement in our own house. Please set us free,” pleaded a weeping Mrutyunjay before reporters who visited the place on Saturday.

“We have been living on biscuits and water. Over these days, I have started feeling weak, not to mention about the condition of my aged mother. I have requested all, including the DGP, but they turned a deaf ear to our pleas,” said Mrutyunjay in chocked voice.

“Sandhayarani, her daughter and a young man named Kanhu would lock our gate and open it on request. Now we are under lock and key,” said Anusuya.
