Police on Saturday arrested a person who is said to be the nephew of an influential minister of the state on charges of thrashing a person and forcing him to sit on his kneels on a busy street in Pratap Nagari area of Cuttack city.

The accused has been identified as Amarendra Pratap Swain alias Vicky. As per the reports, Amarendra also happens to be the general secretary of the Biju Yuva Janata Dal (BYJD). As many as 14 cases are pending against him at different police stations.

The police action came following the video of the incident went viral on social media.

According to sources, some miscreants had a quarrel with a person over the issue of overtaking on Sunday. Later, the miscreants not only thrashed the person but also forced him to sit on his kneels on the road. They even didn’t spare those who tried to come to the victim’s rescue.

Later, a complaint against 10 persons was lodged at Cuttack Sadar police station. Acting on the complaint, the police arrested the accused. A detailed investigation is underway.

It is the second such case of blatant hooliganism occurring in full public view in the city in a month. In the first incident, a youth was tied to a motorcycle and dragged along the busy Mission Road over alleged non-payment of Rs 1,500.

Such incidents have raised serious concerns over the law and order situation in the city.
