The Commissionerate Police have launched an investigation into the death of a girl student whose body was recovered from the hostel room of a private college under Infocity Police limits in Bhubaneswar on Friday.

Sushree Pragyamita Sethi, a second year MBA student at the private college in north Bhubaneswar, was found hanging from her hostel room on Friday evening.

Mystery shrouds the death as the family of the deceased student claimed that she recently got a good job offer and was scheduled to join on January 3. However, the exact reason behind the death is still unclear. Her family lives in Koraput.

“My daughter was very excited as she would have joined the job on January 3. I do not know what made her to take such an extreme step,” said Sudhakar Sethi, the deceased student’s father.

According to Sudhakar, Pragyamita had called him yesterday, asking him to deposit Rs 45,000 for her college fee. “After I transferred the money, she spoke with her mother over telephone. She sounded very normal. At around 5:30 pm yesterday, the College Principal called and informed that my daughter was critical. Despite repeated pleas, the officials did not inform us what had happened to my daughter,” Sudhakar said.

Sources said that family members also tried to reach out to the hostel warden over phone, but failed. They reached Bhubaneswar from Koraput on Saturday morning.

Jitendra Nanda, Assistant Professor and Welfare Officer of the college said,“We are shocked over the tragedy. Police have started an investigation into the matter. Only a detailed investigation will establish if she was mentally disturbed.”

Bhubaneswar DCP, Umashankar Dash said, “Preliminary investigation suggest that the girl died by suicide. We have registered a case and further probe is underway by Infocity police."
