Police arrested a man on charges of cheating and duping a woman of around Rs 1 lakh on the pretext of marriage in Sundargarh’s Rourkela on Saturday. 

As per reports, Biranchi Narayan Nayak, who reportedly holds a B-Tech degree, is a native of Angul town and is working at a private company in Bhubaneswar. While browsing a matrimonial site, he came across the profile of a woman from the Chhend area in Rourkela City. They started chatting and subsequently fell in love. They were so much in love that they decided to marry. The woman’s family also gave its consent. The date for the wedding was also fixed and they were to exchange garlands on March 3. 

The woman’s family had reportedly given the youth around Rs 1 lakh to make necessary arrangements for the marriage. 

On the wedding day, the woman’s family members, with all preparations, were waiting for Biranchi’s arrival but he didn’t turn up. When contacted, he reportedly concocted a story and told them that his mother passed away.

Suspecting something wrong, the woman lodged a complaint at the Chhend Police Station. Taking the case seriously, the police launched an investigation and came to know that he is already married. After arresting him, they produced him in court today. 

“The accused met the complainant on a matrimonial site. They fell in love and decided to marry. The woman’s family agreed too. They had the ring ceremony as well. The wedding was fixed on March 3. But the accused didn’t come on the wedding day. He informed the woman’s family that his mother had passed away. During the investigation, we came to know that the accused is married and has a child too. He promised to marry the woman with an intention to cheat her,” said the IIC of Chhend Police Station, Ranjan Nayak.
