A special fast track court in Cuttack on Saturday sentenced a man to 20 years of rigorous imprisonment for raping a minor girl. The court also imposed a fine of Rs 20,000 on the accused, identified as Tofan Kumar Jena, for the crime.

As per reports, Jena was accused of raping a 12-year minor girl at Jagatpur area in Cuttack district on August 12, 2018.

Biswajit Ray, Special Public Prosecutor said that the accused had committed the crime after entering the house of the minor forcefully. Later, the survivor minor girl’s mother had lodged a formal police complaint in connection with the crime. Based on the FIR, medical examination was conducted and the accused was subsequently arrested.

“The Court has awarded 20 years jail term to the accused based on 14 documentary evidence and statements of 16 witnesses. The Court has also directed the District Legal Services Authority for taking steps to provide a compensation of Rs 5 lakh to the victim,” Ray added.

In another incident, a 52-year-old man has been arrested on the charge of sexually assaulting a five-year-old girl at a village in Odisha's Kendrapara district, a police officer said on Friday. The crime was allegedly committed within the limits of the Pattamundai police station on Thursday evening, the cop said.

The accused had lured the victim, a resident of the same neighbourhood with chocolates, took her to a deserted place in the backyard of a house, and allegedly raped her, he said. Police arrested the accused after the victim's parents registered a complaint. On interrogation, the accused confessed to the crime. Police have booked the accused under various sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, 2012.
