A woman was allegedly strangulated to death by her son over property dispute at Kanpur village under Rajkanika police limits in Kendrapara district, police said on Thursday.

Police have identified the deceased as Draupadi Barik and the accused son as Sanjit Barik. In this connection, the cops have arrested Sanjit and his brother-in-law Nirakar Nayak, who reportedly helped the former destroy evidence.

According to police, Sanjit, who worked in Surat, had been pressurising Draupadi to sell off their house in Mumbai and landed property in Bhubaneswar. But she had been reluctant to part with the properties which were in her husband’s name.

Sanjit had returned home on May 9 and started putting pressure on his mother to sell off the properties. When she refused to agree with him, Sanjit allegedly strangulated her with his belt.

“Bijay Kumar Nayak, a neighbour of Draupadi had lodged a complaint at Rajkanika police station, alleging that Sanjit killed his mother over property dispute. "After registering a case under the relevant sections of IPC, we launched a probe. During interrogation, Sanjit confessed to have killed his mother,” informed Rajkanika IIC B M Sethi.

“Sanjit had devised a plan to avoid arrest. After killing her mother, he left his house. Next morning, he called up to some of his neighbours, asking them to check on his mother as she was not answering his calls. The neighbours found her dead in the house and informed the same to Sanjit. After two hours, he reached home and with the help of his brother-in-law and a few villagers performed the last rites to do away with the proofs,” Sethi added.
