Jilted lover kills girl's brother, injures father in Odisha's Jajpur

Tension mounted high at Kaliapani area in Jajpur district after a jilted lover went berserk and killed a girl’s brother and critically injured her father after they objected to his relationship late Tuesday night. 

The accused went on a rampage near Tarini square in Kaliapani and attacked the girl’s brother and father with a sharp weapon. The girl’s brother died in the attack while her father is battling for life.The incident spread outrage in the village as angry villagers overpowered him and brutally thrashed him before handing him over to the police.

The accused has been identified as Santanu Samal while the deceased has been identified as Jitendra Mahapatra, son of the injured Santosh Mahapatra of the same village.

According to sources, the accused was in love with Jitendra's sister. However, her family was against it as Samal was already married.

In an act of revenge, Samal attacked the father and son with a sharp-edged weapon. They were rushed to Sukinda Community Health Centre where Jitendra succumbed to the injuries.

Irate over the incident, locals demolished the accused's house and set his truck on fire. Later, they staged a dharna, demanding stringent action against the accused. 

On being informed, local police rushed to the spot and tried to pacify the angry villagers. The accused was taken to the police station. 

Tension continued to prevail in the village while the filing of this report.
