The Odisha Crime Branch on Wednesday registered murder case under Section 302 of the IPC against 4 police personnel for their alleged involvement in the custodial death of a person in Koraput district in 2017.

The Crime Branch has registered case against the former IIC of Jeypore Town Police Station Tapan Ratha, former Sub-Inspector Siba Prasad Sahu, ex-Sub Inspector Rajesh Baliarsingh and former Jeypore Sub Divisional Police Officer (SDPO) Rajendra Prasad Senapati in connection with the alleged murder of a man inside Jeypore Town Police Station.

Crime Branch ASP Rama Chandra Thamba has been designated as the officer in charge of the investigation into the murder case against the accused cops.

As per sources, Rakesh Mahuria, a native of Jeypore died under mysterious circumstances under the custody of Jeypore Town Police on January 30, 2017.

While the police claimed that Rakesh, who had a number of criminal cases against his name, died due to an accidental fall while being chased for arrest, the family members of the youth attributed custodial torture as the reason behind his death.

Later, the family of the deceased youth knocked the doors of the Odisha Human Rights Commission seeking stringent probe into the case.
However, due to inordinate delay in justice, the Rakesh's family recently approached the Crime Branch for investigation into the alleged murder.
