A trader from Jagatsinghpur district was injured after two unidentified miscreants fired at him near Athanga under Kandarpur police limits on the outskirts of Cuttack on Thursday.

The trader has sustained a bullet injury on his thigh and has been admitted to the SCB Medical College and Hospital in a critical condition.

As per reports, the trader identified as Khirod Behera was on his way to Cuttack Malgdown when two miscreants intercepted the vehicle in which he was travelling with his driver. The armed miscreants then opened fire at Behera before fleeing with around Rs 1 lakh cash which the latter was carrying to buy grocery and other food items from Malgodown.

Behera, who also runs a coaching centre, regularly visits Malgodown in Cuttack to buy the articles for his grocery shop in Jagatsinghpur district.

“My husband had left home in the morning with the driver for Malgodown. Later, we got to know that some miscreants attacked him near Athanga and looted cash after firing at him,” said Behera’s wife.

The family members of the trader said that they didn’t know Behera of having enmity anyone. Moreover, they seemed to be unaware if the incident was the fall out of any business rivalry or the motive was purely for loot of cash.

Meanwhile, senior officials of the Commissionerate Police visited the hospital and tried to gather information about the miscreants from the injured trader. Further investigation in connection with the firing incident is underway, police said.
