Jonk Police busted a gambling den at Khariar Road in Nuapada on Wednesday and arrested five persons allegedly involved in betting on Indian Premier League (IPL) matches.

The police recovered 21 mobile phones, four laptops, 15 ATM cards, 10 cheque books and 5 bank passbooks from the accused.

All the accused belong to Chhattisgarh’s Raipur, Bemetara and Rajnandgaon area.

As per the reports, a team from Jonk Police Station raided a home at Khariar Road and busted the racket following a tip-off.

“Our night patrolling team received a credible information about IPL gambling running at a house behind Ram Tample in Khariar Road. They raided at the house and arrested five gamblers all of who belong to Chhattisgarh and have criminal antecedents,” said Nuapada SP, GR Raghavendra. 

“Though it was found in Khariar Road, this betting racket has inter-state links. We are in constant touch with the Chhattisgarh police. The investigation is going on to ascertain involvement of other persons in the racket,” he added.

The IPL 2023 started on March 31, 2023 and will continue till May 28. A total number of 10 teams are participating in the cricketing extravaganza this year.
